making a film about intergenerational trauma requires balancing genericity with originality. all of our stories are various branches of the same tree, especially if their roots originate in the same soil. so if you want to tell such a story, you must have a unique touch. your story should be sincere without trying to be sincere, emotional without attempting to be sentimental. sierra makes us feel this right from the beginning of the film. when the censorship blur in the footage reveals her childhood image, and she walks behind her grandma with her mother before disappearing, you realize you're looking at something amazing. gloriously simple yet gloriously majestic. i haven't seen a movie about recreating your own story that has moved me so much since aftersun. sierra, thank you for sharing your story with us; you will always be remembered.

with your last glance at the sink with red eyes, you will always be remembered.

So, so at a loss for words. One of the most moving ethnographic films I've ever watched and it connected with me on such a personal level.
