I was super into it until they fixed his disability. Lucky Star is generally precious and dear and beautiful, and to its credit, never stops being beautiful. I was so pleased to see a powerful representation of an independent person living with a disability, and I was so interested in seeing how they’d resolve getting the main two together. The copout they settled on was mighty disappointing, especially since reality isn’t particularly exaggerated throughout the film before the magical healing. It’s melodramatic certainly, but I never interpreted it as fantastical, which made the ending so strange and to me, slightly sour. I can think of a dozen scenarios I would’ve preferred, even if they don’t always end in a happy ending. Perhaps it’s too much to expect disability representation from this era, but Lucky Star got so close and ultimately, disappointingly, so far. It’s still a highly compelling, entertaining film, and were it not for the absurd conclusion, I’d probably give it five stars.
