Tim Robbins, writes, directs and stars in this superb satirical mockumentary on Bob Roberts, a fictional (although terrifyingly accurate) right wing patriotic American politician. The star-studded cast - while often sidelined to let the title character to be the focus and laughingstock of the movie - are all fantastic, and the parody folk songs are hilarious, reminding me a lot of Nashville, but even more exaggerated in its satire. The film can be both very funny and scarily accurate and therefore pretty dark and hopeless. This movie works on every level, one of the most effective, critical, witty and almost prophetic satires I’ve seen in a while, and easily one of the most underrated movies I’ve ever seen. Highly, highly recommend, now more than ever. We must be doing something right to last 200 years.
