I think I was initially repulsed by the movie due to the protagonist being a shitty person, but by the end I think it’s demonstrating a cycle of abuse from father to son, and the ending is far more sad than it would initially seem. The end likely mirrors when his parents fell in love, and all signs point to him becoming the same abuser that his father was. It definitely could have been more clear (especially with the end music leaning hopeful), but in the end that’s the interpretation I landed on, and I do like the film with it; quite a bit more than I did without it.
The movie is still a bit too melodramatic, and the craft is nice, but not all the way there. I am excited to see Bergman grow as a filmmaker more and hopefully shed that melodramatic tendency of his early work.
