easily the most graphically violent of the series so far. the only film to not have been directed by Yuuri Sunohara also, though she does briefly star in it. this one has more of a story than the others, including some actual dialog at the end and a nice few establishing shots at the start. however it lacks the atmosphere of Yuuri’s films.
Yuuri’s entries always have such a genuinely unnerving atmosphere about them through their sound design and musical scores, two things lacking in this film. not to say this one doesn’t still have an unnerving atmosphere, it does, just no where near as effectively as the previous ones do. perhaps this is due to the directorial change?
asides from this, the gore effects are the strongest here and people that just wanna see practical effects this is for sure the entry to watch. i did find it interesting, as is with this whole series, how it explores death, ritualistic suicide and forces the viewer to confront it, creating a nightmarish atmosphere almost like you as the viewer are also experiencing their death rather than just watching it. idk it’s hard to explain, but this is weirdly one of the only film series that genuinely disturbs me. especially the earlier films, with Sunohara’s “Celebration” entry in particular.
recommended for fans of Japanese cinema, but i do feel overall Yuuri’s films are better due to the atmosphere, but as mentioned this one has the most and best gore effects.
