Yknow it's rough when by it's basic premise i could see a great film in here, where fictional anthropomorphic civilians are forced to entertain themselves to death, by a bulk of capital gain and the existential horrors that come with it.

For like the first 20 minutes and then we kinda just sit in waiting to really investigate the little strings that drive everyone here to their mundanity until those strings settle down, or maybe i'm growing more apathetic to this kind of stuff in film these days.

I get the perspective of letting every tiny part of understanding our system is always distorted out of our control, we wallow in paranoia due to the vast conflicts of perceived truth and succumb towards these dead ends as some twisted vessel of our entire lives, when human progress goes so far to remove any semblance of it's history any amount of evidence has no relevance anywhere leaving meaning behind.

But with restrictive understanding comes with little reflection, just because i understand all the horrors that's conveyed here doesn't mean we can't provide a growth of visual styles beyond what is depicted in the last 2 films that haven't entirely aged but also don't evolve past their limitations either, I liked birdboy for the ways it suppresses it's tone with less time until releasing it, unicorn wars has at least a different visual understanding of the consequences of military authority even if it's own allegories leave a lot to be desired.

On the surface decorado is an existential film with an idea that could only convey many interpretations but from my experience, it unfortunately has one that I find rather disposable, I could see the animation be far more experssionistic and experimental for this type of story to have us experience the artificial reality of this story, different characters having a far more opposite philosophy that contrasts the hell that they are responsible with, but we only get glimpses of them, even as mere ideas. For the majority of it the animation itself isn't really doing much different than what was achived previously if anything it kinda achieves the opposite of what it wants to convey, a sense of hopelessness not further built up by what's behind the characters the whole time. It's like one big rug pulled but when the credits rolled I feel less exposed infront of the screen.

Characters can convey as much existential dread as they will but if every scene doesn't provide at least some progress in it's whole structure, if we couldn't have the chance to dissect the little things they do or say that is instead limited by how much this world builds down by itself, than it's the type of existential storytelling that I could rather see improvment in. Because I know many films that achieved the same tone as this can really be worth dissecting as long as you don't shy away from an uncompromising conclusion to these ideas. It's just that there needs to be more ideas than the obvious.

More of an exercise in animation and visual expression than it is an exercise in narrative,

It propulses at such a breakneck speed that all of the heavy and interesting ideas that it wants to talk about barely get any of the time they need.

The animation is really friggin' good though
