If you ever wondered what there might have been before the big bang, it was probably something like this. All the visual pyrotechnics you'd expect from a proper apocalypse, but the end of this universe isn't the end of all universes.

Okay, look, I know this isn't helpful if you're thinking about watching this. Okay. Think Reggio's own "Koyanisqaatsi" meets "Metropolis" (not the original, but the coked-up Giorgio Moroder remake) meets "In The Night Garden". Also Mike Tyson is in it for some reason. It's arty and maximalist and places wierdness over coherence, and it does get a little didactic in places, but it didn't drag, and at 45 minutes, I kinda dug it.

This movie is drugs! I’ve never seen anything quite like it. It’s kind of like David Lynch at his most abstract, but acted out by circus performers in the early 1900s. The movie functions as a coda to Reggio’s Qatsi trilogy (and Kubrick’s 2001, and a bunch of other material), taking us from the natural and digital worlds into the realm of imagination. There is a narrative, which took some real effort to follow. It seems like an incredibly personal film and I think it would make a great capper for the director’s career.
