This is about as good as I remember it. Not the most entertaining Godzilla but after the travesty that is the 1998 Tristar Godzilla this is a nice start to a new era. Very laid back pacing almost as if I get the impression that TOHO was going “look at how much garbage you guys had to shove in your American godzillla, we can just do this shit with our eyes closed” which is the interpretation I get because; this movie while it isn’t boring it is very slowly paced and pretty relaxed all things considered. Godzilla got redesign for this entry and man this is one of the best designs for him. Very angular and angry looking. Sharps spines and just all around much sleeker looking than the showa era. I like that we actually have another monster to fight against and a new one at that, Orga even though it’s never called that in the movie I’m going off of its name from Godzilla destroy all monsters melee for the GameCube. A monster that can regenerate as well as Godzilla since it decided to try and clone godzillla’s cells and become a better version of him. It’s a shame there’s so much time spent on the alien learning about how society works and hacking computers to steal data to learn about Godzilla only for him to get blown up and turned into a fine paste 7 minutes into the fight. The movie just kind of ends after that, Godzilla wins goes on a destruction campaign and the credits roll. A very odd ending and an odd movie. Besides everything typed here there really isn’t a whole lot to talk about it’s a pretty standard return to form for Godzilla and a welcoming start to a new era. All the movies after this one are the ones I’m looking the most forward to but we had to start somewhere.

Loved how they didn’t even bother reintroducing Godzilla for this era. They just assume us fans know what we’re getting into and jump straight into the action. This is ultimately a flawed film that severely drags when it can’t find its footing. However, when it does find its footing, it exceeds expectations by bombarding the audience with epic spectacle. The practical effects are some of the best to date and the VFX are sufficient most times. The action is exceptional and this is one of the coolest, most stylistic designs for the big G. It’s certainly not a perfect movie, but it sets a tone for the series going forward that has me very excited to see what is in store.

With only a handful of godzilla films left I didn’t expect one to move me, but this had just the right vibes. Despite the dated cgi, the camera work was solid and the composition felt fresh. Maybe a lot of them didn’t work flawlessly, but the aesthetic was maintained nevertheless.
