Now i know this is sure a random film to put on, let me make matters worse for you this was on my watchlist.... i have no idea why or what caught my attention but i remember watching a scene of this on Youtube shorts or something and i thought hey that seems alright let me check it out one day and today was that day. Is it the greatest movie to ever exist no way, was it 90's in every fibre of its being yes, did i enjoy it some what. lets get into it.
Look there definitely were some good parts of this film there is no doubt about it, probably its greatest strength was the emotions that the film invoked it was a very heart-warming, uplifting film showing that there is genuine and good people out there. I thought it also showed some amazing themes, how compassion, kidness and honesty can be the best thing for yourself and others. having a kind heart and staying true to yourself regardless of any circumstances that change around you and in this case money. We also got to see the opposite of this through Rosie Perez's character and her demise at the end of the film and the way she changes throughout or more so her true colours started to shine through.
I thought that the acting all round was quite good, i thought Rosie Perez as normal was very good in her role, she done my head in and annoyed me but that was the point she played it well and was casted even better. Albeit not one of Nicolas Cage's best film or a regular film of his but i thought he was quite good here, he was quite emotionless for the most part and relatively bland but from what we saw from his character i thought that this was perfect and he acted accordingly considering he can be a nutter with his delivery, looks and more. I Thought that Bridget Fonda as the leading lady so to speak was quite good i haven't seen her in anything else but she was charming, good looking and very sweet and played the role well. My Boy Stanley Tucci!! he was in this film and i thought that he was quite good in his small role pretty off type for him but he played it well. I really enjoyed Wendell Pierce here i thought he was a great character who brought the fun and laughter to it. Isaac Hayes who i know as Chef from South Park was really good as the narrator usually i don't like narration in this type of films but i thought it was very well done and the way they went full circle with his character and the ending made the payoff all that sweeter. I also thought Seymour Cassel played his slimeball character extremely well, just something i finally want to put in here this is oddly a bit of trivia for you this is Bones' Emily Deschanel's acting debut as the character who throws paint on Rosie Perez's character.
I really enjoyed how they integrated us into Queens and New York City, they showed us some very famous places and it really felt like New York City wasn't anything spectacular but all of the references, dialogue and walks through the streets really helped some of the scenes.
Although that this film is based off a true story the only true part is the Cop and waitress, they pick 4 numbers each and he said if we win we will split the winnings, all of the other stuff is just for the screen both the waitress and the cop were friendly but happily married respectively however my point is i thought that this is quite an original idea and quite a cool one, all of the love and romance we have seen before but the vehicle for it was quite fun and something different but all the same at once!
I thought that the cinematography was quite alright there were a few cool shots in particular i think of the Hot Air Balloon, The Paint on the Fur Jacket and some of the opening shots. nothing amazing and out of this world but for the medium i thought it was quite good and enjoyable.
To piggyback before off of the Sets and the integration of the New York City life, i thought that the costumes were also very nice to the eye and helped, they really toned it up when Muriel won all of the money she was in the best of the best whilst Charlie and Yvonne lived below their means and stayed as they were this showed the mindset and class divide that Muriel thought she was bigger and better than everyone else because she now has money. But even outside of this the costumes of the Waitresses and the Officers really built on the story.
I think the script isn't all too bad i didn't find it overly cheesy, it showed moments of heroism, bravery, love, hate everything. i really enjoyed the switch between some comedic aspects and some more heartfelt or lessons.
I do have a few complaints however, i found the pacing to be uneven and at times i did get a little bit bored and wanted aspects to move on a little more, there necassirly wasn't anything id full cut out but there were things i thought that could've been trimmed and other things that could've been expanded on.
I also found that characters were sooooo shallow outside of their own values and beliefs it was very cliché with not any bones to their decision making or why they are this way they just are, if we added depth to this i think it works better, i wanted to see why they are the way they are and not just told.
i found i really didn't connect with the love aspect or story it seemed very forced, they had a flirty conversation and we had to see the partner say she is in to you, like we already didn't know that just was a bit too on the nose for me. But also there wasn't much outside of a few long deep looks to show this off we just had to be told or it was rushed and showed on screen, it just didn't make a whole lot of sense for me.
Look final complaint and it may be a dumb one is every decision made on screen is sooo unplausible and ridiculous i found myself constantly going seriously this is what is going to happen or see scenes unfolding before my eyes that i knew would go this way.
Look i know i have been harsh for the last little while but overall this was never going to be a masterpiece or an all time romcom or just comedy as a whole but i think it does a lot right, i appreciate the writing and direction of hopefulness in this sometime very nasty and mean world, The acting was very good from Fonda, Cage, Perez and Cassel, i thought the sets, cinematography and costumes added to the 90's feel and whimsiness of it all but it falls down with some boring scenes and no real connection to the characters or stakes, with some questionable decision making from the characters. if you're intrigued and wanting something like this to watch go for it but don't hold your breath!
