This entire movie is 2.5 hours of people running to different parts of China’s bluest palace and threatening to stab their frenemies. Sometimes they even do stab them. Mostly goofy and fun.
Finally watched enough 2023 for a top ten list.

Crazy plot, they have the sharpest knives ever seen. Would love to know more about the actual history of this event.

Coming into this movie I was unaware that this was based upon a significant poem in chinese history so it was really neat to learn about that in this type of medium. Lots of twists and turns but I can't help but feel mixed about the whole movie. While I love that they tried to take a lighthearted comedic approach to this murder mystery, there were many times where the editing just felt wayyyy over the top for me, especially during the scenes where they are doing something as simple as walking from one location to another, it felt like a jumpscare when the loud ass music would earrape me in the theater. I enjoyed the overall outcome of the film but there were parts that felt way too extra and over the top for my taste.

Imagine a Shakespearean tragedy but with a ton of plot twists. Very melodramatic but honestly I didn’t mind. And honestly, really funny! Though there were clearly some jokes that went over my head since I don’t speak Mandarin rip (the whole theater would laugh and I was like… wtf where was the punch line..?)
After the movie I asked a Chinese viewer if it was true that everyone knows it by heart, and she confirmed that she was made to memorize it in middle school. Yes I actually talked to someone after the film I’m no longer anti-social. We even chatted as we walked down the streets of Chicago (how romantic... Damn I should’ve got her number… she was really cute).
I love going to see the latest Chinese film in theaters. Like it’s just me and 20 Chinese people. They all stare in amazement that this dark skinned American is in the theater. I feel like the token white boy on the all-black basketball team. "I'm rockin' with Carter 'cause he rockin' with us" hell yeah
