This might just be one of the funniest films of the 1930s. A good ol' farce is what I wanted and a good ol' farce is what I got. It's very hard to not laugh or chuckle or smile or grin as the film tries to guarantee a joke a minute. Every time you are amused by the hilarity and wit simply restart the timer.
The simplistic characters of the farce make for excellent subjects as the simple setup of a cad hoping to prove to himself that he can do something straight by another man and by extension the woman he truly loves - bicker as they might - all while performing as he truly is to try and disillusion an obsessive who only falls more deeply and deeply in love with the exaggerated self feels very much akin to our own modern day understandings of the parasocial relationship. These layers upon layers, all bolstered by the presence of Digges, the manservant, who goes along with everything and is exasperated by it all.
It's Love I'm After wouldn't feel too far out of place on stage, but what little visual gags there are are meant to support the timing and cadence of the incredibly funny dialogue and delivery of the actors. Thoroughly enjoyable. This might just be a film from this time period that I'll have to repeatedly show other people
