i had the pleasure of rewatching this movie in the presence of its director, along with hundreds of like-minded people who had also come to have the same experience, and i have to say, it's quite different. rewatching this made me view it from a very different lens, and especially after a streak of watching especially heinous "feminist" movies, i really appreciate it!!
it's thoughtful, and as mr. director said, it raises many questions. ones that in a jordanian society, are not addressed at all, and are even scoffed at.
one thing to note here is that this movie does not critique sharia law, nor does it step close to doing that. it simply takes a scenario where that is the law in place, and demonstrates how EVEN when you have a strict set of laws protecting women, you still find men with a backwards mentality who do everything in their power to strip you of that.
her brother and her husband's brother are despicable people, and i have never been happier than i was when i finally heard her say: "i am not your sister."
