This film is absolutely f--kin brilliant. It has one of the best piano scores I’ve ever heard in a film, the visuals are stunning especially for something made in 1926, the pacing is perfect, and it feels way ahead of its time with the effects and the writing.
The film explores themes of temptation, morality, and the struggle between good and evil in a very profound way. And that ending is just breathtaking. This is easily one of the most important films ever made. I can’t wait to watch more of Murnau’s films, I’m planning to watch Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans tomorrow and I hope it’s just as good.
