Very well done iteration on the familiar story about a promising young black teen battling the pull of gang life with the prospect of a better life. The wise old man who sees him despite his flaws makes an appearance as well as recently dead family member. But even with the familiar framework, it’s still very well done. Great cinematography, great performances, strong dialogue, good editing. Does it add something to familiar story? I think a little bit. And it’s probably the best film I’ve seen in this class since Moonlight (which Story Ave rips its violin theme from pretty clearly?). Think this will be a great showcase and catapult for Asante Blackk and first-time director Aristotle Torres
