i liked the way we could see the dynamics of each relationship, close in proximity or close in bond. a very realistic, mundane scenario with scenes of threats and intimacy, in which this case is vulnerability. more vulnerable than explicitly intimate i would say. what really struck me was tessa's conversation with her therapist. i found much striking reality in what she had to say about loving someone else. that it can feel lonely, and she feels the need to stay because she feels like she understands him to his core. their closeness in that sense. but sometimes she feels alone because there is no one to to share the love of ben with her, as much as she loves him.
entirely driven by dialogue and tension, i thought this was done pretty well for a low budget film set in a single location. extremely awkward and realistic and felt like i was in the room with them, standing awkwardly, watching everything unfold in front of me. i love how the synopsis said adam was a voyeur. he technically was, however, involuntarily peeking into the messier sides of tessa and ben, things people wouldn't see, because of their closeness (in proximity).
i liked the addition of lizzy, ben's high school friend. even though we don't see the reunion, their dialogue says enough for us to infer what they both were like during their schooling days and it says a lot as we also analyse the people being presented in front of us, reminiscing. lizzy and ben's closeness is an insight into what they were like and the way they were acting seemed like a window to tessa, of what could've been. it made her uncomfortable, and she honestly had the right to feel like that anyway. pretty cool stuff and i love discovering new things on mubi
