King of Jazz

I know a lot about animated shorts and the history of it and I know this film has the first colored animated sequence ever. With something so influential I would’ve gotten a higher rating and probably put it in my top four. The reason I didn’t is because i’m not totally convinced it was that influential. In the animated sequence they used a 2 stripped technicolor. The 2 stripped technicolor didn’t work in animated shorts only for this short 2 minute animated sequence not a 8 minute short or a 1 hour and 30 minute film. Even though this does come out before Flowers and Trees it was not as influential due to the technicolor in the King of Jazz not being able to transmit to animated shorts or feature length like Flowers and Trees.

It’s not to say that this 1930 musical revue—that calls a white man (literally his last name is Whiteman) ‘The King Of Jazz’ and features an extended number demonstrating how jazz is a big melting pot of different cultures’ music that fails to include a single black person—is without faults. But the faults are all super interesting and when it’s great, particularly the Vaudeville numbers, it’s incredible. Plus, it’s in color! From

Me 6/10. Some great looking effects for 1930 and everyone seems to be having a great time, but it is barely a movie and is just a bunch of songs and a concert with random short clips interspersed
