there’s nothing that says “i worship satan” more than d&d and heavy metal music

i think this doc is definitely more for people who are at least somewhat familiar with the history of the satanic panic beforehand, as it’s much more focused on the specific context of the “michelle remembers” book than a comprehensive overview of the era in general, though it does at least give the broad strokes and definitely gives the viewer jumping off points to pursue further information and research.

things that could have been elaborated on in my opinion (although i assume budget was an issue so i’m not super critical that they didn’t) are the whole nigeria thing (the racism and xenophobia going on there was wild), the depth of involvement of the catholic church in creating the book and subsequent panic (definitely moved past the meeting THE POPE part way too fast), and also what happened to my man doug???

I fear the stakes of this documentary weren’t set up well. There is brief mention of some people going to jail and little other discussion of consequences. Because the Satanic claims are so sensational, the harm that the false claims cause seems a little trivial. 
Sarah’s interest in the societal movements that precipitated and followed the Satanic Panic is maybe most interesting here. (biased) And also the family’s perspective of Dr. Pazder’s marriage to Michelle.
