pros: vicaria was an interesting character, and the design of the modern monster (her brother, chris), was well done. i appreciated how vicaria was an outcast in her school because of her background and an outcast in her community because of her school; that was a creative choice that allowed her character to feel more realistic and relatable.
cons: there was a lot of heavy handed political messaging, and i felt like it didn't actually get its point across in a meaningful manner. several of vicaria’s family and community members’ characters felt underdeveloped, which meant that they weren’t impactful to the story. the jump scares were so frequent that they were ineffective and just ended up annoying me more than anything else.
in the end, my verdict is that this movie was just okay. it wasn’t bad, and i would watch it again, but there wasn’t much that made me really enjoy it.
