Offering a caustic immersion into the lives of disaffected junior high students on the cusp of adulthood, the film takes place over the 5-day period before, during, and after a ferocious, seemingly liberating typhoon, which six of the students endure while marooned in their school.

why do we treat the journey toward adulthood as the death of adolescence? adults themselves never seem to fully grow up, and yet all the pressure lies on us teenagers to become something even they fail to define. typhoon club subverts the traditional coming-of-age story, by refusing this illusion of growth, recognising instead the chaotic, uncomfortable, and uncompromising state of our existence.
my entry to shinji somai and really enjoyed all the overlong and exposed shots. i can’t wait to watch more of his works!
