Just watched this for my film group at work so here’s what I put to them:
Really nice animation! Great use of rotoscoping, also great use of mixed media, the digital aspects are blended well with the hand drawn animation.
Voice acting was well cast, not surprising as Mary Hidalgo was casting director and she has a goated history of credits. Michael J. Fox & Leonard Nimoy I’ll always enjoy hearing, it was also nice seeing John Mahoney was one of the voices. It had a fun set of characters with the ragtag bunch, I would have liked them just chatting together more.
I enjoyed my wife.
The story was fine, kids film so fairly cliche in places, very by the book. Nothing wrong with that.
The outro song was shite.
All in all it’s enjoyable, I mostly got mileage from the animation quality. I had thought I had never seen it before but about 30 mins in I realised I recognised every scene, I must have watched it once at some point. So I’ll probs not watch it in full again as the story isn’t willing me back but I will be referencing it as an example of how Hollywood hand drawn animation dropped off pretty quickly after 2002 (I definitely haven’t seen Treasure Planet before but I hear it’s animation quality is like this if not better). It is a shame Disney didn’t continue investing in its artistic merit with it eventually cutting that entire side of its production to focus on only CGI projects, although I hear humours they are going to start that back up again, fingers crossed.
