*“They got away. What do we do now?”
“We keep going.”

A very powerful yet sweet story of resilience. The Little Girl Who Sold The Sun shows Sili’s journey, a poor, handicapped girl in Senegal who gets hired as a newspaper seller, all through laughter and hardships. The film tackles very difficult subjects and still manages to not feel too heavy, all in a breezy 45 minutes.
It’s a beautiful homage to the courage of street children, and takes a deeply feminist approach, whilst also dealing with themes of ableism and the effects of colonisation. Our lead character is full of strength and hope, and she’s deeply loveable and inspiring. There’s a lot of symbolism for hope, hope of a better life for the characters we meet and for the whole country as it develops. The final shot is deeply metaphorical: Sili and Abou walking together towards a beacon of light; a new, better future.
The images are simply stunning, a colorful and warm dive into the streets of Senegal that is wonderfully shot. It’s truly gorgeous.
A watch that will definitely make you smile, and make you think.
