An interesting concept but Robert Taylor’s character was kind of a dick. Like man I get you’re stressed but why would someone put themselves in danger to help you when you’re a jerk?

leave it to an american to waltz into nazi germany demanding to see the manager

on a serious note, i’ve seen many ww2 films but none from this particular angle. fascinating that it was released in 1940 and set in 1936. really honed in on civilians who just went along to get along or too scared to step out of line or thought themselves powerless to do anything. again, thinking too long about it & modern day will leave you feeling a little queasy.

ANYWAY norma shearer (she’s so so solid) & conrad veidt (charming & sinister combo) really drive this movie, along with the supporting cast of character actors (felix bressart you have a special place in my heart bc of to be or not to be)
