I really, really love this series. im honestly shocked to see that it hasn't gotten more members yet because good god!!! I've never felt so scared and anxious in front of a movie before.
it's really hard to rate, might up it to a four stars because in many ways this steps up from the first movie (edit but I did make this four stars lol). I find it much more entertaining throughout, the found footage arrives much earlier and it's a lot more engaging. but because of this I feel like this piece is less assembled in a way. we follow two stories with multiple point of views/cameras (which is awesome) but they don't really link as much as it could've; it feels a bit like a succession of scary moments in order to create rhythm, which it does very well, the narration is much more balanced. but ig it loses its sense of "this is a story from a to b", and it's rather "this is a and this is b with a little bit of d and wait no you have c". you can't have it all, I guess. but if the storylines are knitted together in the following movie I'll accept it.
still, this one is still really good. peak found footage, truly terrifying. the different uses of cameras (vhs, phone, body cam and car cam) are absolutely great. I love the ongoing theme this series has about "something has been there and watching you the whole time but you didnt see it/saw it too late". the scene in the attic with the song "boots" is genius but it can also give you cardiac problems. the use of almost folklore elements and the different kind of embedded storytelling (folk superstitions, camera footage, even the paintings) just add to this whole mystery and it's so great. I also found some very interesting visual elements here; they try to keep the documentary facade (and it's so good you forget you're watching a movie) while still having some nice cinematographic moments.
