nostalgic in a really painful way, i cant relate to being the only brown muslim in a majority white environment, but i did grow up in the uk nonetheless. i found moona and doe’s friendship to be heartwarming even if they both felt like home was so painful and purposeless to the point where they were undertaking a treacherous journey to a false reality. seeing doe’s flashbacks hurt and i really resonated with her struggling relationship with her mother. i found it really interesting how doe’s insistence on kindness/righteous within people can only occur if they’re muslim, had been challenged in her journey to syria. she makes constant references to whether the delays and arising problems in the journey might be god’s sign to turn back yet she still battles with this religiousness in her head. this was really great for nadia fall’s debut into the film indistry !! really recommend
