It's rare I do an in depth review on a film but in the case of "The Absence of milk in the mouths of the lost" I feel as though I need to. Not only because I had many thoughts whilst watching, but because I want to say a lot to Case (the director), who I know is reading these reviews.
First and foremost, extra special shoutout to Case for sending me over a digital copy of this surreal masterpiece because I'm unfortunately unable to watch it on physical in UK. Truly appreciate it.
This film feels like something you would stumble upon on YouTube in 2017 as a kid on one of those "cursed side of YouTube" playlist or if you put a full stop into the search bar. This may well possibly funnily enough one of the biggest compliments I can give to a film. I grew up on that shit and for some reason, whether intentional or not, it gave me many memories of those types of stuff.
The Absence of Milk in the Mouths of the Lost tackles emotions of guilt, trauma and grief in such a surreal and effective way that reminded me of something of the likes of David Lynch. The cinematography and overall vibe of the film reminded me SOO much of the likes of Luther Price (I have only seen one of his films but ykwim).
The costume design of the milkman and demons (I thought they were meant to be human cows until I read the casting) were actually very impressive. And I'm not too sure why I liked it so much.
I saw a review that said "People need to stop thinking they're David Lynch". Out of EVERY review I've read I find this to be one of the most stupid. Most, if not all modern day surrealist filmmakers, including myself look up to David Lynch. He is one of the best directors of all time. It's like saying you think you're Gordon Ramsay just because you're a chef... that's just not how it works.
Anyway, I got off track. This may be my 2nd longest review I've ever done right next to inland empire. Overall, great fucking film, amazing fucking vibes.
Edit: This IS my longest review
