I understand why the more recent evil dead movies are slightly more toned down than this, but man is this a scary movie. There was a lot of damage done to horror in the 2010s franchise reboot-era where everything had to be a gritty and bleak version of its original, but this feels like one of the few ones that actually nails the dark tone, pays subtle homage to the original, and manages to create its own unique, bold-soaked thing. The practical effects in this movie are so impressive from a time where nearly everything was rubbery cgi, and no matter how many times I see that finale it still leaves me gagged (bagged, bloody, and buried as well). Some of the imagery in this is so skin crawling that it still sticks with me 13 years later. I wish so badly that we could have seen Mia taking on the Ash role in at least one more movie. I’ll still hold out hope.
