Even though I love James Cameron’s Titanic and would say it’s the better movie I also enjoyed this more detail-oriented approach (even if those details weren’t exactly correct) and how the lack of a romance subplot gave a broader scope to the tragedy. Since you don’t really have any main characters to care about or focus on you’re left simply witnessing the tragedy take place through the various different passengers you meet and eventually the horror of the actual incident, I really enjoyed that creative choice here. The character work is very well done too, you get so many perspectives of the tragedy from all types of people on the ship, and even though I wanted more focus on the lower class the rest of it was very well done, especially since it’s paired with that very nicely written script. It’s 2 hours long, a bit simple in the way the story’s told yet never feels overlong for a second, I’ll surely be revisiting this at some point, there’s just so much to appreciate here.
