i cannot think of a country (besides perhaps senegal) that is more underrated in terms of its cinema than hungary. films like ‘The Fifth Seal’, ‘The Cremator’, ‘Mephisto’, ‘Wind’, and this film are hidden gems that would fly under the radar of the vast majority of even the most seasoned film buffs. i want to say the success and influence of Bela Tarr overshadows and “snuffs out” these films, but thats a stretch.
there is nothing man craves more than explanation, even when something cannot be explained. this film is not simply a search for a killer, this is a search for humanity, for reason, for motive, in a world where there is none. where there is a lack of understanding, a lack of answers, man becomes desperate, whether its the blaming of gods or devils, or the baseless prosecution of innocents, man will find a way to explain the unexplainable, but still, thats nothing more than a sorry excuse for an answer. such a fallacious system has defined man as far back as records go, and will likely extend as far as records will. there is no end to it. 1 step forward is always 2 steps backwards. with every question answered, 2 more arise. it is but the perpetual struggle of mans existence.
what a dreadful film (i mean that in the best way possible). its the most Bela Tarr film i have ever seen that isnt actually directed by Bela Tarr, and it makes me miss him that much more. what a film.
