Part something or other of watching films while really sick.
Sun Honglei does a great job as an absolute chameleon of a police captain, but Louis Koo's Timmy Choi is of course the real star. All the way throughout, I found myself admiring his instincts at the same time I hated his cowardice and willingness to betray everyone around him.
There's a definite sense, to me, of escape in Timmy's various manipulations and ploys. He's lost his wife, and he's set to be executed. He wants out, and he doesn't want anyone following him, even if it means killing his brother and his godfather.
The ending has an absolutely fucking stellar shootout which ends up being a fairly definitive Pyrrhic victory. Even as someone who hates the death penalty, I did enjoy seeing that prevaricating, treacherous scumbag die.
"If you don't take it, we're done talking."
