Going into this, I didn’t realize it was directed by Clint Eastwood, but nonetheless, I really enjoyed this film. It’s definitely one of the best films of the year for me. I thought it was brilliant—a true morality lesson that made me reflect on things from a different perspective. This film really challenges you to think about what is truly right and what you would do in that situation. I felt so conflicted between wanting Justin to get what he deserved and wanting him to be with his wife/kids and live freely. I can’t understand why some people are criticizing this film or claiming it suffers from poor writing; I completely disagree. I was honestly impressed by the writing and the performances of all the actors, but the one who stood out the most to me was Nicholas Hoult.
When discussing actors and their versatility, I believe ‘Nicholas Hoult’ is quite underrated. In every film I’ve watched him in, whether it’s good or bad, he manages to shine and deliver an outstanding performance. His portrayal of his character’s guilt and battle with alcoholism was impressive! I genuinely felt sympathy for him, yet I was also frustrated. I know a lot of people didn’t like the ending of this movie, but I thought it was pretty good. I don’t want to give anything away, but leaving us unsure if karma was going to catch up to him or not was clever since it lets us interpret it in our own way.
Overall, it was a great movie! I’m glad this was my first film to kick off the new year. Once again, what an amazing performance by Mr. Lex Luthor himself, Nicholas Hoult. I can’t wait to see him portray my second favorite comic book villain in IMAX this July! Nicholas’ Lex Luthor will face off against David Corenswet's Superman! The 2025 movie of the year is on the way!
