this film is automatically getting a 1 fucking star rating because don’t get me wrong wes craven love you and all but this film was utter dogshit like i cannot believe i made myself sit through the whole hour long thing it wasn’t anything big just your typical porno film not to mention the weird disgusting incestuous plotline also the whole orgy scene at the end just thinking to myself on why i was sitting here watching this because there was so many up and close scenes of them just going at it like damn chill out you fucking animals but yeah this film was complete garbage and extremely boring maybe it just has to do with the fact that these straight porno films are always uninteresting and overly dramatic to me as a gay man 🤷

I was aware that Craven had worked in porn early in his career, but had always assumed it predated his horror work, so I was surprised to learn that this was actually produced in between his two gritty seminal low-budget classics Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes. Evidently this was thrown together to help alleviate the deep debt he was in after sinking all his money into making LHotL.
Even more surprising is that this is very much a Wes Craven movie and not just a straightforward porno. There is a sense that Craven wasn't quite as invested in giving this as coherent of a message and plot as his other work, but he can't help himself from inserting a lot of the same themes, topics, and stylistic flourishes that he's known for. While the story largely exists solely to provide opportunities for a range of sex scenes, Craven was clearly processing some heavy stuff with religion and morality at the time and The Fireworks Woman offers an intriguing insight into his demons and shifting worldview. Funnily, this is as clearly influenced by Ingmar Bergman as his Virgin Spring riff Last House on the Left was, only here we get a seaside brother/sister relationship and a masturbation fantasy scene that directly echo Bergman's Through a Glass Darkly.
Some interesting editing here, though I think some scenes would work better if they pushed even further into experimental cross cutting and elliptical editing. The climactic orgy/fireworks sequence in particular would benefit from a more ecstatic and disorienting approach.
The soundtrack is one of the most peculiar I've come across recently. A few scenes are set to snippets of typical 70s porn soundtrack funk grooves, but then frequently and erratically shift into anything from oompah band ditties to whirling circus music to less structured piano riffs that are almost free jazz. The aforementioned masturbation fantasy starts tenderly with an easy listening folk-adjacent ballad (Robert Howard's Rainy Afternoon, the only music mentioned in the credits) which blends into Pachelbel's Cannon (used throughout as the love theme for Angela and her brother) which then gives way to discordant orchestral swells as she imagines being anally penetrated by her brother. Just odd music cues choices all around.
I'd actually rank this pretty high in Wes Craven's oeuvre. It's no People Under the Stairs or Hills Have Eyes, but it's more interesting than probably any of his 80s work or anything he did after the first Scream.
