I appreciate 𝘟𝘟𝘠 as a good start for the first movie watched in my Sex In Cinema class --
Sex, as a noun, exists beyond a societal binary, and this fact deserves to be represented in popular media, cinema, and culture.
However, I literally had this discussion in my Creative Writing course right before this class; a work of fiction, whether it be film or a story, is absolutely dreadful without a relatable or likeable character.
The performances in this were great in the sense that they were believable and accurate to the emotion portrayed. I guess it would be the script and direction style that I have a problem with. Okay, you have two insufferable leads -- one who's always angry and one who's a dumb mouth-breather.
Oh, but one is gay, the other one is intersex! See, that's why they're always crashing out on screen.
There's no depth there. It's the angsty, confusing teenager that is trying to discover their identity, and as the viewer, we see nothing more of them as a person except for their rollercoaster of madness while trying to discover who they are. It offers some good exposition and substance for about 15 minutes. But 90 minutes of that is too much.
And do I need to even mention the sex scene?? It was so graphic considering the fact that the main character is literally 15 years old and the whole thing was poorly timed and directed.
Like, sure, this was a believable movie with some strong ideas, but a movie shouldn't exist to just be believable, it should exist to sway judgement, elicit critical thought, and leave the viewer taking away something that they'll hold onto.
Too bad. It was mediocre.
