This film feels like a spiritual awakening.

The beginning of Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell sets up the core themes of the film, spiritual transcendence and faith. The three men discussed about faith's ambiguity and it's justifications. Later on, we follow Thien's journey in understanding faith despite it's ambiguity especially regarding the death of Dao's mother. Pham Thien An allows us to understand faith and the spiritual realm in a deeper level. He also demonstrated that these two notions are what breaks us from this cocoon and finish our "metamorphosis" as human beings, an ending to the aimless wander for our own self pleasure but entering into a reborn state.

i have never seen such a slow movie. every scene drags, and each shot is extremely long and when i say each shot i mean each shot. i dont quite understand the story, but it feels like we r living in the moment with the main character. giving a 2.5/5 because its beautiful but js so slow and really gets no where.

“i want to believe, but i can't. i've tried searching for it many times, but my mind holds me back.”

what a transcendent piece of kino. its a 3 hour long spiritual and philosophical metamorphosis of beauty, grief, loss, faith, existentialism, and oh so much more. that honestly reminded me of Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s or Bi Gan’s films. the contemplative, slow, and emotionally packed sequences, the long takes, the way the camera pans, the intellectually complex dialogue, the odyssey-esque story, it was all so reminiscent of their works, but not to the point of imitation, things like the themes, score, and emotions of this film set it apart perfectly. 

the fact this was a directorial debut is fucking insane. its such a dreamy and mesmerizing film. genuinely one of the best movies ive so far this year.

The film feels like an aimless meander there’s no direction, there’s no goal, it’s purposeless to the viewer, and it stops being cute about an hour in. 

The first time I tried to watch this I stopped to go take a nap. The second time I actually fell asleep half an hour in, which let it be known is when we first see the title card. 

Some shots of the scenery are nice but tbh if you added it up I probably spent about 10mins looking at a stagnate picture of a mountain, which does not fill one with joy. 

I wanted to give this a 3/5 but after watching an unmoving shot of a rooster crowing for 2 minutes I can’t find it in me to do that
