Mental they made a Star Trek movie in 2025 and I forgot it happened.
I like Star Trek. I’m mostly familar with the modern shows (SNW and Lower Decks) and the theatrical films. I know nothing next to nothing about Discovery which this is spun off. I like Michelle Yeoh. (Who doesn’t). But in a franchise with movies like Nemesis and Into Darkness. This is the Star Trek movie everyone hated. Let’s find out why…
I don’t know if I should be complaining about an in universe recap when I also have no idea what is going on. I didn’t watch Discovery, would that make this film better if I watched that. I didn’t know or care what was really going on mostly,
I think this film looks “decent”. It’s nothing compared to the previous three Abrams produced affairs. It’s a very made for streaming looking movie masquerading as cinematic. There’s also an obsession with “Ken Burns” crop zooms which is a terrible thing to have in your movie. Unnecessary zooms and jump cuts to cropped versions of the same shot plague this.
The cgi is decent, for tv. There’s a fight near the end on a moving vehicle and the background looks really laggy. Which is a strange description to give to an effect. It’s clearly shot on a Volume type thing used in The Mandalorian. And it looks like it’s running at 15fps.
Michelle Yeoh. I love you. What are you trying to do in this movie?. You tried to give mother but you gave Autistic Chilean turning 18. You aren’t helped by the awful script. It’s sad this is her first leading role in a movie since winning the Oscar.
Jamie Lee Curtis is in this too. So can add this to her terrible post Oscar 💩 streak along with Haunted Mansion, Borderlands and that picture of those suffering Palestinian children she posted of as Israeli… oh wait.
As for the rest of the cast of characters, don’t care for them. Mostly Unmemorable compared to other Star Trek crews. This really reminded me of Lightyear that I watched yesterday and also didn’t like.
So at the end of this. I had to think of myself. What makes this not just a bad movie but a bad Star Trek movie. And I realised…
What I like about Star Trek is the weird science fiction concepts on display. So there’s a movie about transporting whales to the future to save humanity, or finding a being masquerading as god, or a planet where everyone stays youthful. Even if that fails there’s good character stuff. That’s what held up the average SNW episode. Here, none of that. No good concept, no good characters, No It’s just some tired stock rogue band of heroes in a Guardians of the Galaxy type thing except bad.
