while this movie is flawed (bad) and unnecessarily long, i do appreciate the story it was trying to tell. the lesbian representation, in my opinion, was decent enough and shockingly progressive for a filipino lesbian film in the early 2000's. i was quite surprised when rome and juliet kissed. i only expected them to bump noses, or share nothing more but a hurried peck on the lips that you can miss if you blink; but much to my disbelief, there were even a few other intimate scenes between the two throughout the movie
now, was this the best filipino lesbian representation in media? absolutely not. was it refreshing to see relationship, social, and cultural dynamics in a lesbian film that weren't so western for a change, but something i could actually resonate with? you bet! once you get pass the questionable creative choices, weird lipsyncing that sound nothing like the actors, cringey dialogues and acting, rome and juliet (2006) can be endearing—and the performances of mylene dizon and andrea del rosario were enjoyable. they each get a star
(i believe that my cat, lisan al-gaib, would also like to say something about this movie. she expressed her thoughts by stepping on my keyboard as i was writing. written below is her own review of the film
