Not even sure what I can say about this movie or where to start. I’m a weirdo, maybe the only person out there, that says that this is their favorite movie OF ALL TIME. Child’s Play 2 is just such a masterpiece to me, and always has been. It builds upon everything the first movie did and just goes further. At the same time it doesn’t just repeat what the first did well and instead goes its own way to really establish itself with less of a slow burn and more fun with the set pieces and comedic elements. The opening is such a favorite of mine, seeing Chucky brought back from seemingly such a definitive death so effortlessly really establishes how impossible it is to take him out and makes him that much more of a threat. Especially when you see how relentless he is to get to Andy. Andy himself is so awesome in this movie as well with him so clearly changed and more mature from the events of the first film, but still at his core a genuine child that’s scared of Chucky. Even with that he stands his own here even without Karen around. I’ve always believed the foster family aspect is so creative and a great direction to take to give Andy a sense of isolation and unfamiliarity as he continues to adjust to his life now. Kyle is an amazing addition here that gives the audience another character to root for that looks out for Andy, even before Chucky reveals himself. Their sibling dynamic ends up being the heart of the film, that in a way reflects the mother/son dynamic in the first. Getting back to Chucky, his more playful attitude and quips really make the movie. It really makes it feel like we’re seeing this concept and character being used to its full potential which makes Chucky incredibly compelling. The audience roots for him as much as they would for Andy or Kyle. All the death scenes having some fun with them and pushing the envelope makes them endlessly entertaining. Obviously the yard stick scene has always been a favorite, as it sort of encapsulated exactly what Chucky COULD and SHOULD be. Within the childhood setting of something like a classroom using an everyday item by an unassuming doll creates the exact juxtaposition you would want with this. All of the set design is downright incredible and creates this creepy almost fake dollhouse look to a lot of the interiors that work to further the perfect aesthetic the film has. The directing by the late John Lafia also really elevates the film to me, making another instance to where it feels like it’s just the ideal execution of what this franchise can be. It would be criminal not to mention the final act, which I believe is quite possibly the best in horror history where all the elements I’ve mentioned up to this point just come together for such an engaging and thrilling conclusion. Especially the set design again, with such an unrealistic and nonsensical factory just working perfectly with the unbridled rage that Chucky has. It’s a movie I could gush about for hours upon hours with how much love I have for it, I really do believe it’s the best horror sequel I’ve seen and such an important movie to me. I grew up with it and it really gave me a love of horror and especially practical effects. I love you Child’s Play 2!!!!!
