So to contextualise the reason I watched this and why it’s such a low review was it was picked in my work film group, I haven’t seen this in what must be over 30 years when I must have watched it on repeat for a week or something because I was so inherently familiar with every scene and beat of this film.
It’s a good children’s film, it holds up well with some scenes looking visual pleasing with matte backdrops and frankly excellent compsites.
The writing is simple but whimsical,
That’s what happens when the writer is John Hughes. The thugs are well cast and frankly likeable, no child would feel threatened by any one of them and you always feel the baby is in no way in any threat from them, he is the threat.
Like I said though, had I not clearly squeezed this lemon dry when I was a child I probably would have had enough attention span for it, but I’ve never been one who enjoys nostalgia. It didn’t deserve to be a box office bomb, it’s well directed but by the looks of the directors filmography I fear it might be his best. But this low score is purely on me and how much I care about something I have left in the past, it’s not bad at all and any small child would love it!
