my favorite aspect of this documentary was dream reading through donyale’s journals and the illustrations that reflected her inner story & life + archival footage.
i do find this documentary at its worst as disingenuous or dishonest when it comes to donyale’s addiction issues and her relationship to drugs. i have to assume it’s this attempt at protecting her legacy of some kind but it only contributes to this very one-dimensional and dehumanizing view of her. she was a whole person who felt a lot and struggled a lot. and there’s no shame in that. but i feel like the end of documentary & it’s vagueness says that it’s shameful.
