one that you really just need to see without reading about it.

this movie sets the bar incredibly high for any movie which hinges on information reveal — seeing this movie for the first time expanded my view on what makes film great. it’s similar to uncut gems in that way in my mind — i hadnt thought of “conveying stress” as a thing i could be impressed by until i was actually impressed by it in uncut gems.

here, the information reveal is not corny, and doesnt feel “ungettable” — you really can see the whole movie’s plot unfolding if you’re watching closely, but you dont, because it misdirects you ever so subtly to make the big reveals so hard hitting. a good a-ha moment is incredibly hard to create

how far are you willing to go for obsession?

fire movie and not what i was expecting at all! setting it in that time period makes so much sense. plot twist galore, though they were all pretty logical. only thing i didn’t love was the idea of the box machine thing because the movie was rooted in reality otherwise, but still that reveal and logic was well done

Took me awhile to get to this one but so glad I did.

Unfortunately I do think this is the least compelling of Nolan’s movies I’ve seen so far. The surprise towards the end you could see coming from a mile away.

Not knowing anything about my last two movies going into them (Lurker and this), the topic of obsession vs love is front and center. The approach in each is wildly different. Lurker was dark, deep, complex, and probably not great for a mainstream audience. The Prestige is all the same but with Nolan’s thorough storytelling.

Seeing the two A-List stars of Bale and Jackman obsess over their craft and duel with each other to fuel their obsession is engaging and thoroughly entertaining. Obsession over their craft is not the only fuel to their dynamic though. Love interfering throughout the fued with varying relationships brings together a really compelling story.
