sadly my flop of the year. had such high hopes for this given my thoughts on the worst person in the world, but alas
my starting point for this, and any of my reviews, is normally to reflect on my immediate reaction upon leaving the theater
and then to attempt to unpack that feeling, dissect where it came from, and point back to the things the filmmakers did which evoked those feelings
the starting point for my reflections about sentimental value is “i didn’t connect with it”. for a pure character drama like this, the experience lives and dies by the emotional impact, and for me, it died
is this an empathy skill issue? is it a failure in storytelling from the filmmakers? am i not the target audience?
… it’s impossible to say. i suppose im currently in the camp of thinking that this movie wasn’t made for me. i don’t have experience with the themes presented (#blessed), and thus found it hard to fill in the blanks of the incredibly understated performances from all cast members. yes, the inability to express is kind of the point — i get it, but man, i would have at least loved some musical direction or something
i don’t have much more to say. this largely bored me. i wouldn’t recommend it. renate reinsve is awesome though
