Tangerine

Closer to a 4 than a 3; rating might increaseTangerine had been on my radar since watching The Florida Project and I can see why this film is so acclaimed as it had some truly excellent writing from Baker, some stellar performances, and the other use of a fucking iPhone to make this movie sounds pretentious but it works as the film progressed further down into the city of LA. Baker utilizes filmmaking techniques to create a perfect display of this area and the neediness of these prostitutes, most of them transgender, to survive in this modern world. The film feels like a documentary at points, I felt like Baker and his associates followed these people around to examine their lives, lives that lead to a great build up towards the end. The last twenty minutes are absolutely fantastic, James Ransome is hilarious and the clashing of every major and minor character's conflicts works so well that it creates a feeling of anxiety. The third act helped this movie a lot for menas it took a while to get used to some of these characters, mainly Sin-Dee. For a large majority of the film you dony exactly root for some of characters so it could make the ending feel a bit rushed. There were issues I had with it that did affect my rating as well in the fact that, apart from the leads, I didn't care for the performances of many of the side characters. Towards the beginning, some of the agregous camera movements were distracting and for the most part I didn't feel much outside of instance of me caring for some characters and some hilarious parts. My rating might increase on a rewatch but I didn't think this was bad at all, it's pretty close to being great.
