“but, isn’t violence bad?”
“no, son. violins. violins are bad, that screeching musicis gonna ruin this goddamn country”
this is probably my most anticipated horror movie ever, besides bride of chucky but i’ve watched it already, and because i loved it so much i wanted to jump straight into the sequel, and despite its shockingly low score, not only on letterboxd but literally every other website, i still prefer this a lot more than the original trilogy, while the first one nice and i loved the second movie with its epic toy factory finale, this movie felt one of a kind, and embraces its dark humour that the franchise before bride of chucky, severely lacked!! like they should’ve done this sooner, as these movies are so much better when they don’t take themselves seriously. i’m always going to adore horror comedies, especially slashers, no matter how bad they are: because i usually dislike when slashers focus way too much on irrelevant things that most of the time, end up with a dull outcome. and i think child’s play 3 really suffered from that, it tries to give chucky a couple of funner lines and while that is nice, it just doesn’t go full out and plays it way too safe, ending up with a formulaic and boring approach. seed of chucky’s approach is something which is completely unhinged, and yet it totally works, mixing campy and meta humour, and while it’s a little bit of an oddball pairing i really enjoyed it here. it takes place on a hollywood movie set, as chucky and tiffany have a movie made about them and the acts of the prior film, starring jennifer tilly as tiffany, which is another thing i love when real life actors stare as themselves, especially in a horrors setting (such as new nightmare) and i really don’t understand why this isn’t done more often. while i will admit, some comedy really doesn’t land, i think the jokes are so terrible that it’s becomes hilarious, often being gratuitous, crude, tasteless in the best ways possible. for example: the absolute bizarre promo for the films release?? a scene where chucky literally masterbates!! i never thought i’d ever utter those words, and during the scene i couldn’t tell if i wanted to laugh or cry, but i will always admire its complete ambition when it comes to its humour, like yeah it uses campy, over the top humour that most of the times comes off kinda trashy, but i think they the really fun part of the film. obviously, my favourite or one of the best parts of the film is jennifer tilly: playing a highly over exaggerated version of herself, her comedic timing is spot on and her voice is so addictively soothing, and also playing tiffany showing her versatility, also there being a totally random red man cameo?? like he can’t act at all but it was funny enough so i didn’t mind. this movie takes loads of risks, and again i just have to respect it so much for that, toning up the comedy and going in a really unconventional style that is incredibly ahead of its time, it’s an ambitious project that really switches up from every other film up to now, and its strange direction was perfect, and saves the franchise honestly. glen/glenda was also great, it’s really shocking that this was made in 2004 because the way they go about the gender of the doll was really ahead of its time, also the john waters cameo was crazy, my mouth was on the floor.
