Off the bat, some of you may be surprised by this score.
Let me start with the following:
1. Lindsey Lohan was at my screening (go to r/NYCMovies for my picture).
2. The audience made this movie experience 10x better than if I went alone and the movie fucking rocked.
As the first bullet mentions, yes I happened to stumble into a screening with a surprise appearance from the star herself, Lindsey Lohan. It’s rare that Kaitlyn will proactively tell me she wants to come to the theater and see something with me. Fortunately Freakier Friday is very much so in her wheelhouse so we picked a day and bought some tickets.
There wasn’t really anything abnormal to start. Normal showtime, normal seating options, normal booking. When we arrived at the theater we were informed of a special voucher all Freakier Friday moviegoers were recording of a free small popcorn and soda. Huge win because this would’ve been $30 otherwise. Still not thinking too much of it. Lincoln Square has some advertising and special promotions at times.
Then we walked in.
Camera crews scattered across the outer perimeter of the walkway. Lighting equipment at each corner. Clearly something was going on.
Once we arrived at our seats we had to have a few girls move as they were in the wrong seats. As they moved we heard them mention how they were told to sit wherever they wanted. Now the suspicion began to rise.
Kaitlyn and I chatted the person sitting next to us who mentioned that he booked a ticket because he saw Lindsey Lohan post on social media that she was in NYC and coming to AMC Lincoln Square.
Now we are freaking out. What the fuck had we stumbled upon? I go to a lot of cool screenings, but nothing like this had ever happened before.
A DJ is playing music and doing trivia for Freakier Friday popcorn buckets all throughout the chaos. People are waving green and purple pom poms all over the theater.
Quick side note: the pop corn buckets for trivia had $500 AMC gift cards. Truly wish I won one of them.
Eventually the DJ had us singing the song from the movie as Lindsey came to the front of the theater. A bit surreal watching her thank everyone for coming and throwing out tshirts to the crowd.
After she wrapped up the camera and lighting crew spent 15 minutes manufacturing the perfect pictures for their social media. Honestly it was quite dystopian. From it outside perspective on social media it probably looked like this genuine surprise interaction. In reality it was a cool experience that was overshadowed by the reality of real life being manipulated to be idealized for the masses online. Left a slightly sour taste in my mouth.
Nonetheless, the movie was outstanding. A perfect sequel (something Disney usually struggles with). Jamie Lee Curtis had me cackling and on the verge of tears.
The authenticity to the time period was genuine and pure. The acting, aside from Chad Michael Murray, felt reminiscent of early 2000s Disney. And the nostalgia hit on all fronts.
Such a memorable experience. Can’t wait for more memories at my favorite theater.
