I finally went to a morning screening at the cinema again. The last time I went that early was for the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, because my theater did a marathon of Episodes 7, 8 and 9. That was a really fun experience, so it was nice to be back for a morning session.
As for Cleaner, the movie isn’t bad, but it definitely has a lot of room for improvement. One of the main issues for me is that there’s not as much action as I expected. The film never really feels too long, but there’s a stretch in the middle where not much happens and the pacing slows down quite a bit. I think if they had tightened some scenes and added more action, fights or shootouts, the movie would have worked much better overall.
The soundtrack is fine but nothing particularly memorable. There are a couple of shots I liked visually, but the film doesn’t do a lot stylistically beyond that.
Performance wise, Daisy Ridley does a decent job. She works well in the action scenes and I liked the dynamic between her character and her brother. Taz Skylar was actually one of the highlights for me. His performance fits the character really well, even if I didn’t fully buy the character’s motivations, which made it a bit harder to connect with what he was doing. Seeing Clive Owen show up was also a nice surprise.
Story wise, I feel like the movie spends too much time outside the building without much happening. It almost feels like they stretch those moments just to get some nice exterior shots, but the story ends up losing momentum because of it. If the plot had moved into the building earlier and focused more on the confrontation between the protagonist and the villains, the pacing and tension would probably have been much stronger.
I did enjoy some small references to the MCU, which were pretty funny and unexpected. Overall, the movie mixes some action, a simple thriller plot, and a bit of commentary about big corporations and climate change.
In the end, it’s a decent watch. Nothing amazing, but the kind of movie you can see at the cinema to pass the time and have a reasonably entertaining couple of hours.
