So many things going on.
First, I think the Soska’s sisters’ direction is solid. The cinematography is simple, but works and the color scheme/production design rocks. Plus, decent acting all around with Ashley Moore and Andre Anthony being standouts.
I was a little disappointed in the way the zombies looked. I think the prosthetics cheapened it and honestly, a more natural approach would’ve fit the vibe more overall.
I think the weakest part of the film is the script. WAY too forward with its intentions and misses the mark in its emotional desire. The general plot wasn’t bad, but it was just so overwritten.
But let me tell you what REALLY pissed me off. Why the hell would you have a character sacrifice himself when there’s a clear path ahead?! I am all for disability representation, but there’s seems to be something especially cruel about putting a wheelchair user in a situation where speed is key. Had that been approached in a more nuanced way, it could work, but the lack of nuance in tandem with the self immolation was wack. It seemed to attempt to imitate The Mist where help shows up seconds after the sacrifice. And when I say pissed off, I mean really pissed off. Like more than movies usually do.
There’s some decent pieces here (namely acting and production design), but can’t save a poorly written script.
Still need to see the original.
P.S. IRIS IS COMPHETTING OUT THE WAZOO BECAUSE SHE’S CLEARLY IN LOVE WITH ASH.
