People who read Frantz Fanon in college but who also like poolside thrillers will appreciate this film.
I love some elements of this movie such as the subtle, then rapid escalation of things. I liked the premise. Some of the acting was great! However, this movie had some pulpy noir elements that - to me - held the film back.
Some people think this would have worked better as a miniseries, and I get why - more room could have smoothed the pacing and allowed for deeper exploration, giving it a more prestige feel. That said, expanding it might have been a bit much right now, and I appreciated that the film’s restraint and ambiguity keep the focus on the relational drama within extraordinary circumstances rather than the circumstances.
Overall, it was a very stressful watch.
