Belongs in a class of its own in terms of definition. Unbound by all rules, you get to see Oshii go off on the deep end. One of the most deconstructive films I’ve seen, broaching both formal boundaries like Dogville and metareality like Eros+Massacre. Its self-investigation of cinematic reality possesses a confrontational Godardian audaciousness.
Oshii was a singular voice and this is probably an important work. On the other hand, I appreciate this more academically than I do actively. There’s a manic energy predating Sion Sono here which is hard to get around sometimes. So while I think the film is interesting, it’s not as fun to watch.
