After watching “School on Fire” on Amazon Prime I figured I saw the cut version of the film, which is totally fine. Yet after I checked out some stills from the uncut version, they should definitely put back in the shots of Brother Suave’s impalement and his blood trickling down to the school sign. I’m pretty sure this was the shot that Ringo Lam intended to end the film with.
Still, even the current version on Amazon Prime with the bad quality is probably Ringo Lam’s best film, and “City on Fire” and “Prison on Fire” are nothing to sniff at. “School on Fire” is utterly manipulative but absolutely necessary. This film will make your blood boil at institutional incompetence and how utterly useless schools and the police are at protecting both its oldest and youngest citizens. Yes, this film is about Hong Kong, but really it’s about all of us and the bullshit that happens on a systemic level anywhere. The film is incredible, but I also don’t think I can ever watch this one again cuz I’m already angry enough in my regular life.
