Def a step up on a rewatch. Some of the best child performances I’ve ever seen. (Free on YouTube! Someone just uploaded it lol) 

This is based on one of my favourite books of all time, and even though the book clears the movie, it’s still a serviceable adaption that nails the beats of the story. It is nice to see some of my favourite scenes brought to life (even if it is way more intense in the book) The cast really carries it with Anthony Hopkins at the helm. 

What I adore the most about this movie is the relationship between Carol and Bobby. It makes me reminisce around crushes and first love. The feeling nailed it and I got very sentimental and melancholy watching it. 

RIP Anton Yelchin ♥️ an amazing performance. And you looked like me when I was a kid. Little curly headed emotional 11 year old. Lol

One of my favourite books of all time! 

Serviceable adaption. What makes it great is 

ANTON YELCHIN! (rip) you can tell he was something special just by watching this movie. It just might be my favourite child performance of all time.

HOPE DAVIS
Added a lot of humanity to her character. She did well 

MIKA BOOREM
Another pretty great child performance. Captured Carol

Performances all around were fantastic. The cinematography was also weirdly impactful and interesting for a 2001 mid budget movie no one knows about?? Was a treat to see. 

Now it’s only a serviceable adaption as there was so many frustrating choices and missed opportunities in the film. Probably fine for someone who hasn’t read the book, but the book is so rich with little things that was neglected in this movie, a lot of those things that I actually think would of helped the movie a ton, turning it from a good movie to a great movie. 

The book is also a collection of short stories, and missing out on 3 stories does impact the characters quite a bit. The book also had way more of a sense of anxiety to one of the major plot points, which the movie just brushes past. Even if I hadn’t read the book, I wish that plot point had more weight to it. 

It’s just so close to being great , but just falters a bit.
