I wonder how much of this was just a biography of Woody Allen's Post "Annie Hall" (1977) life. With him releasing "Interiors" (1978) and "Manhattan" (1979) two movies that scale back the comedy and act as dramas. I also didn't really like both of those movies I found Interiors to be a really beautifully shot film while being simultaneously boring, Manhattan was my first Woody Allen film and one of the first films I watched in my Film Journey.
Allen masters the dramatic filmmaking in this one from the opening which shows him in horror trying to escape from a moving train possibly being an allegory for the fame he received. The beautiful cinematic shots baked in Black and Wjite the shadows in that scene later in the film with Dorrie. The film is just so captivating the repeating of the autograph signings the swarm of fans make me think this is just a biography for Allen's post-Annie Hall movies. It was probably a huge shock to go from Love & Death to Annie Hall to Interiors to Manhattan in a 4 year span Comedic highs to Bergman esque stories.
Great and captivating film.
